A Deck for All Seasons

There are few home structures that immediately conjure images of a good time with family, friends, and loved ones, like a deck. But when you picture that time, what time of year is it? Chances are it’s the summer. But while hot dogs and barbeque are a great way to use your deck, every season is lovely in Southwest VA, so why not have a deck for all seasons?

Summer

With summer as a jumping-off point, we barely need to explain its place in a deck for all seasons! Summer is the traditional time to spend on the deck, and it’s also the time of year when we get the most calls for deck construction!

Are you in need of a new deck? Or are you wondering if your current one is in good shape? Give T & H a call to take a look!

Fall

Some may argue that spending an autumn day on your deck is even more enjoyable than a summer one. The temperature is bearable with little humidity, and you can enjoy the fall foliage that other people have to travel from other states to see right in your backyard!

Why not have your morning coffee outside and enjoy the crisp autumn air? In the fall, you must include your deck in your annual leaf and debris cleanup, especially if you have a lot of trees.

It’s easy to allow your leaves to accumulate but the built up can collect moisture and may even bring mold. Plus leaves are easier to clean up before they break down!

Winter

Many people think of winter as a time to stay inside, but with the proper planning (and clothing), there’s no reason you can’t enjoy the outdoors in the winter, too. And it’s not truly a deck for all seasons if we don’t at least discuss your winter deck options!

In cold-weather countries like Norway, there’s a saying that translates to something like “There is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing.” And we agree, but with a caveat – you may not need to bundle up quite as much if you have the right deck accessories.

One of the best ways to enjoy the winter outside is with a fire pit. Just be sure that yours is either installed by a professional or is fully insulated and can sit on your deck!

In addition to safety with your fire pit and other deck accessories, you’ll also want to be careful to remove snow and ice from your deck during winter. But don’t scrape the deck! Use a plastic shovel and non-corrosive methods to melt your ice, such as Calcium Magnesium Acetate, which is less harmful to wood.

Spring

What can you say about Spring – it’s summer light with more allergies! We kid of course. Spring is a lovely season especially in Virginia as our many native perrinials begin to bloom.

To prepare your deck for Spring, just hose off the winter gook, check for any issues (or call your local home improvement company too) and haul out the summer furniture.
