Bathroom Remodels Part 2: Modern Bathroom Design

In January, we began the new year with a bathroom blog focused on how people change their bathrooms to help them match their lifestyles. That included everything from growing families to aging in place. But what about the fun stuff – changing for a fun and modern bathroom design?

That’s what we’re getting into today. Because, like it or not, we all have to spend time in our bathroom, so if you don’t love it, why not change it?

Modern Bathroom Design is Simple and Elegant

In decades past, ornate, heavier detail was the norm in bathroom design, especially among people who had the ability to make their bathrooms the way they wanted them to be. Larger cabinets with ornate curves and fixtures, and detailed molding were all the rage.

Today, the modern bathroom design style is simple and elegant. That’s a product of both style and substance. Simpler details make things easier to clean, which is something we can all get behind! The style comes partly from that function but also follows the trend (see below) of creating a more relaxing, spa-like atmosphere in our home bathrooms.

Less is more means less distraction.

What About Color?

Color preferences change all the time. It’s almost like the paint companies are trying to stay in business! But what was in a few years ago can still pass today, whereas areas painted a few decades ago can make a bathroom feel instantly dated.

Continuing with the relaxed, simple feel, modern bathroom design typically uses neutral colors, whereas bathrooms of the past frequently used colors like pink, yellow, and green.

Relax

Bathrooms exist primarily to serve a couple of functions, and perhaps because those functions are discussed in polite conversation, bathroom design was often utilitarian.

However, modern bathroom design focuses on the relaxing elements of a bathroom, creating a spa-like atmosphere. The functions are the same, but now we try to make baths and showers the focus and to enjoy them.

We often use soaking tubs, rainfall shower heads, mood lighting, and the simple elegance we discussed in the above section to make our bathrooms feel like a place where we can take a quiet respite from the world.

Space-Saving

Continuing with the theme of functional elegance, modern bathroom design incorporates energy flow and space-saving elements into the bathroom. Gone are the days when bathrooms were bulky and compartmentalized.

Now, we build cabinets into walls and include low-profile vanities where possible. Likewise, we frequently use glass in our shower doors to create a more open feel and allow one part of the bathroom to flow seamlessly into the next.

Modern Bathroom Design Includes Modern Features and Amenities

Some of the best parts of modern bathroom design are the technological advances we’ve made that make our bathrooms more eco-friendly and sanitary. If you’re redesigning your bathroom, we’ll include water-saving elements, and you can also consider touch-free faucets and other fixtures!

Customization

What could be more of a modern bathroom design element than customization? When we think of the fifties, we think of a time of suburban conformity. In truth, the culture was more complex than that, but it was the dominant zeitgeist.

Today, we embrace individuality in all facets of life, and our homes -and bathrooms- are no exception. So, while we’re happy to share what we know about modern bathroom design and give you our recommendations based on our years of experience, T & H Home Improvement is really here for you.

What do you want in a bathroom? Let’s talk it out and come up with a plan that will make your bathroom into a space you’re proud of!
